    Key Experience

Environmental Site Assessments and Remediation Experience

Mobil Terminal and Lubricants Facility, Yarraville, Victoria, Australia

    Groundwater and Remediation Investigations

Project Manager and Technical lead for groundwater and remediation investigations associated with a Victorian EPA Audit for the Mobil Yarraville Terminal and Lubricants facility. The large scale operational bulk storage and lubricants blending plant is located adjacent to the Yarra River and surrounded by the Yarraville industrial area in western Melbourne. Comprehensive investigations were undertaken within a multiple aquifer system comprising fractured basalt, sands and silts and clays impacted by a combination of petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, pesticides and metals (predominantly arsenic) associated with both the Terminals operations and adjacent sites. Investigations involved LNAPL and DNAPL mobility and recovery feasibility assessments in both fractured and porous media via the use of petrophysical analysis, modelling and geophysical investigations, conceptualization of fresh/saline water, groundwater/surface water interactions and groundwater/subsurface utility interactions and vapour intrusion assessments. In addition, the project scope included the development of a remediation pilot trial programme involving skimming, vacuum enhanced skimming, total fluids, vacuum enhanced total fluids and Air Sweep technologies, conceptual system design, implementation and monitoring for the recovery of LNAPL, and management of dissolved phase impacts at the site. The investigations led to the development of a Clean Up Plan and Remedial Strategy to fulfill the requirements of the EPA issued “Clean Up Notice” for the facility.

Mobil Terminal facility, Spotswood, Victoria, Australia

    Groundwater and Remediation Investigations

Project Director and Technical lead for groundwater and remediation investigations associated with a Victorian EPA Audit for the Mobil Spotswood Terminal facility. The large scale operational bulk storage facility is located adjacent to Stony Creek which discharges to the Yarra River and surrounded by the Spotswood industrial area in western Melbourne. Comprehensive investigations were undertaken within a two aquifer system comprising fractured basalt and sediments impacted by a combination of petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents associated with both the Terminals operations and adjacent sites. Investigations involved LNAPL mobility and recovery feasibility assessments in fractured basalt, conceptualization of groundwater/surface water interactions, groundwater/ subsurface utility interactions, and vapour intrusion assessments. In addition, the project scope included the development of a remediation pilot trial programme involving skimming, vacuum enhanced skimming, total fluids, and vacuum enhanced total fluids to facilitate the recovery of LNAPL and reduce the flux of LNAPL impacts to groundwater and ultimate discharge to the adjacent Stony Creek. The investigations led to the development of a Clean Up Plan and Remedial Strategy to fulfill the requirements of the EPA issued “Clean Up Notice” for the facility.

Confidential Hazardous Waste facility, Victoria, Australia

    LNAPL Conceptual Site Model Development

Technical Lead for the development of an LNAPL Conceptual Site Model and remediation pilot trial programme for the recently closed confidential hazardous waste facility located in Victoria. The ultimate project objectives were to evaluate the potential to recover a highly viscous PCB laden LNAPL from landfill cells, in addition to evaluating the migration potential of the LNAPL from the landfill cells to a fractured rock environment and ultimately to the nearby water receptor. Investigations focused on understanding and modelling LNAPL distribution and recovery within the highly heterogeous waste cells and development of a field trial program to assess the feasibility of LNAPL recovery.
