    Property Experience

    Bondale Apartments – Norfolk, VA

    Project Manager

    Served as for a Virginia Department Environmental Quality (VDEQ) Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) Case involving an orphan oil line transecting a residential property in Norfolk Virginia. Significant corrosion of the orphan oil line has resulted in a significant petroleum release at the property including free petroleum product entering a number of residential apartment basement structures. Whilst the LUST case predates my employment with D3G, since commencing in January 2018 I have taken the project management and senior technical lead role on, including the development of a detailed site characterization work plan which was approved by the VDEQ Case Manager in April 2018, and was successful in attaining funding through the VDEQ LUST Fund which reduced overall costs to the client (a local housing authority) by approximately 75 percent.

    Developed technical scopes of work and undertook Phase II ESA’s across multiple jurisdictions for property transactions. Performed soil, groundwater, soil vapor and indoor air evaluations in states including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Ohio, Virginia, Delaware, Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, Utah, Washington, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.     Responsible for providing technical input to, and undertaking, site-specific baseline risk assessments for Air National Guard facilities. The baseline risk assessments are routinely undertaken as part of site or remedial investigations where contaminants of concern have been identified associated with installation facilities such as USTs, above-ground storage tanks, battery neutralization chambers, aircraft maintenance facilities or historical waste disposal practices.     Project Manager and Technical Lead

    Responsible for acting as project manager and technical lead to support the Managing Director, an EPA accredited Auditor, to undertake Environmental Audits across numerous states. Audits were required for brownfield development sites to ensure that the development complied with environmental legislation and guidelines. Audits often required me to communicate statutory requirements to clients and environmental consultants, and the clients’ requirements and concerns to statutory bodies. These projects required excellent knowledge of environmental legislation and guidance, the ability to critically review, analyze and summarize complex information effectively and provide guidance on Audit requirements in order to minimize project variations for the client.

    Managed, undertook and provided technical support to environmental assessment and remediation projects. Assessment projects routinely included detailed soil and groundwater investigations which required core drilling, soil and groundwater sampling, and groundwater well installation. I am also experienced in installing soil gas probes and bores, and conducting sampling via passive and active methods.

    Successfully implemented a broad range of remediation projects that include removal of underground storage tanks (USTs), soil excavation, treatment and disposal, groundwater extraction, treatment and disposal, and soil vapor extraction. Prepared and oversaw ongoing groundwater monitoring programs for environmental compliance with EPA directives. For example, clients with significantly contaminated land were required by EPA to submit annual monitoring reports documenting the extent and nature of contamination at the release site, and any additional remedial or investigation efforts implemented during the reporting period. Routinely conducted the annual groundwater and/or surface water monitoring, assessed trends in the data and prepared or updated applicable fate and transport models for contaminant plumes.

    Technical Team

    Erica was part of the specialist technical team that conducted contaminant fate and transport modelling and human health risk assessments. For example, a client operating a manufacturing facility in rural Victoria had contaminated the soil and groundwater with xylene as a result of leaking USTs. Hydrogeological modelling, in conjunction with the soil and groundwater investigations was used to determine the maximum likely extent of the plume and if risks to other groundwater users down-gradient of the site were present.  Due to the nature of the local geology and type contamination (volatile organic compounds), soil gas probes were also installed to monitor for vapor beneath structures on-site. The groundwater modelling was used to guide the placement of down-gradient wells as well as to guide the installation of a groundwater extraction and treatment system to treat contaminated groundwater at the site and to prevent further off-site migration.

    Project Team Member

    Project team member and region-manager for the assessment of over 80 commercial properties across Sydney, Australia. A client contracted our firm to assess its commercial property assets to determine compliance with new contaminated land regulations that were being implemented by the NSW EPA at the time the project was undertaken. The assessment included detailed site history assessments to determine the likelihood of contamination at each property. Of the 80 properties, 56 had active or abandoned underground storage tanks (USTs) which were recommended for further assessment including detailed soil and groundwater investigations. A further 22 properties were determined to have soil or groundwater contamination resulting from the USTs that required remediation. Remediation was undertaken at each of the properties and variably included the removal of USTs, soil excavation and on-site treatment, soil excavation and off-site disposal, in-situ groundwater treatment and installation of groundwater pump and treat systems. Two properties with volatile contaminants were also evaluated for soil vapor migration to beneath neighboring properties. All remedial activities were successful at remediating the sites to comply with EPA guidelines and state legislation. Six properties required notification to the EPA for ongoing management following remediation due to contamination having migrated off-site.

    Avon Dam Environmental Flows Assessments, Sydney, Australia

    Project Team Lead

    Member of a project team undertaking a baseline study of environmental conditions in the Avon River channel prior to, during and following the release of targeted flows from the dam designed to improve the channel environment. Acted as team leader for the geomorphological assessment.

    Condition Assessment of Open Stormwater Channels, Sydney, Australia

    Project Team

    Member of a project team responsible for providing comprehensive locational data and structural analysis of open stormwater channels in the Sydney region. Customized the software (ArcPad) on a handheld GPS computer to streamline the data collection process in the field, which lead to significant efficiencies in time spent in the field and in post-processing the data to ensure accuracy and consistency.

    Pacific Highway Upgrade – Warrell Creek to Urunga and Wells Crossing

    Project Team

    Member of a project team that prepared detailed models and route analysis for the environmental impact assessment of a major highway upgrade in northern New South Wales. Digital terrain models and route analysis tools were utilized to determine the best option for a major bypass to minimize the impact on the environment and key stakeholders. I also assisted with the preparation of mapping products and 3D models for the community consultation process.

    Provision of quick-time mapping and geospatial intelligence products to Australian engineer battalions being deployed for humanitarian assistance to the south-east Asia region following the December 2004 tsunami. Erica made fast assessments of the level and type of infrastructure damage from satellite imagery in order to produce spatial products for troops being deployed to the affected areas.
